Junior Summer Course

Summer Activities Dunmore East

Homestay in Ireland

For ages 9 to 16

This year the accompanied group trip will be from:
10th July - 24th July 2022 (2 weeks).

This course is ideal for students who are going on their first trip or because of their age need to be supervised.

One of the most important aspects of the trip is the constant personal attention. The trip begins and ends in Andorra, but we also take students from Spain and France and collect them at the airport. Both trips are accompanied by Learn Away staff, who are also co-ordinators with the families in Ireland and who stay in Waterford for the beginning of the course. During the stay, students are appointed a local leader. Any problem which arises can be solved quickly as the staff can be contacted at any time. There is a 24h service to contact the school staff for emergencies (Spanish spoken).

Waterford is a small, safe city in the south east of Ireland and close to many other interesting places. For more information about Waterford and the school, please click here! Waterford is the winner of the best city to live in 2021, thanks to its security, quality of life, architecture, beautiful coast and pedestrian areas.

What about the Homestay?

  • All students stay in Irish families, carefully selected by the director of the school, who has many years of experience. We also work with her when we send in the application forms so that every student receives a personal service. All families are vetted by the "Garda" (Irish police).
  • There are many types of homestays - some with young children, some with older children, others with no children. There are young, middle-aged and elderly hosts as well as some widows - but whatever the age, they all look forward to having guests in their homes.
  • Irish families are very sociable and it is an ideal opportunity for students to practise English in a positive and friendly environment and to use it in a variety of situations. Students also get to know another culture and develop personally.
  • Importantly, students are not placed with students who speak any of their languages.
  • Accommodation is sharing a twin room with another student or family member of same sex and similar age.
  • Students are expected to make their beds and keep their bedrooms tidy.
  • On Sundays the day is spent with the family.
